Week 10 #23 Reflections/Summary

A couple of my favorite discoveries were Del.icio.us and online productivity sites. Del.icio.us will allow me to have all my bookmarks/favorites in one spot where they can be accessed from anywhere. The same goes for online productivity. Not having to worry about a disk or flash to save or transport data is great. I will pass this information on to many of our customers.

I think this program has been most beneficial. It is obvious that learning is lifelong and continuous. With so much emerging technology, as an information specialist I must keep up with the changes in order to better serve my clientele. Learning is ONGOING!! I was a little surprised to see how many new technologies that are out that I wasn't aware of. Some I will never use but am glad to have the opportunity to explore them so that I can share with those needing them. A few I will definitely use.

Harris County Public Library can use many of the technologies. First of all, having staff to learn these technologies the staff can better serve our customers. We are already using De.licio.us and Flicker.

I learned a lots from the program. I think the time to complete this program was underestimated. It took much more time than expected. When you have to listen to videos and then visit and explore several sites it can be quite time consuming. When you work in a library that is busy busy, you often find yourself putting the exercises to the side to complete other assignments. Also, not all of the assignments were clear as to what exactly needed to be done. Thank goodness my supervisor set aside 'uninterrupted block of time' for the staff to complete the program. We also have a couple of individuals who are really knowledgeable of the technologies and were willing to assist those of us who were not so familiar. If you have this program again, I like the idea of having group training in the training lab where information can be shared. This worked best in my setting.

Week 9 #22 Downloadable Media

I took the opportunity to explore the HCPL eBranch. I actually downloaded Say A Little Prayer by E. Lynn Harris to a MP3 player. I found the whole process to be fairly easy. Of course, it is important to READ...all of the information needed is on the site. HCPL has a diverse collection of eaudio books, music and videos. I also looked at LibriVox. It contains free audiobooks from the public domain. It was easy to use and can be great for getting the classics and older materials but of course it isn't going to help you if you are looking for newer material. Wowio has free copyrighted audiobooks. I didn't see hardly any popular titles but noticed quite a few financial, resume, and business material. I think both sites can be useful depending on your needs.

Week 9 #21 Podcasts

I explored podcast.net and podcastalley.com. I found both sites to be similar and easy to use. I didn't care for the search options. I wish the sites had advance search options for more specific search results. I chose 'Meet the Author' podcast from podcastalley.com and added the RSS feed to my blogline. I think podcasts can be helpful to libraries. There are so many library related podcasts available.

Week 9 # 20 Discover YouTube

I had fun exploring YouTube!! Wow...there are so many videos! I viewed videos in each of the catagories. The site was easy to use and many of the videos were informative and helpful. On the other hand, there were just as many videos that were just trash. YouTube videos were used in the ihcpl exercises and were quite helpful. So I think the site can be beneficial to libraries. I just finished reading The Secret by Rhonda Byrne which inspired me to choose the video "Inspirational Quotes for Success". The video is a relaxed collection of quotes to inspire and motivate. The Secret talks about positive thought for positive results so I wanted something on that same thought process.

Week 8 #19 Web-based Apps

Zoho is great! How many times have you been somewhere and needed your disc or flash drive for your information or maybe your document is too large to save to your storage devise. Zoho to the rescue. I like it. I found it very easy to use and many of the features are similar to Word and other word processing programs. I will be using this one!!!!!

Week 8 #18 Social Networking

I was only aware of three or four of the social networking sites listed. I really don't care for social networking sites. I think networking can be most beneficial to those who have an interest. Like most things, there are dangers associated with social networking. We often hear of the dangers involving online predators or individuals who claim to be someone that they are not. Although danger does exist with networking online, it also exists with networking out in the real world, too. For those socialites out there, just use common sense and listen to your inner voice and be real careful. I found Rate My Space and Threadless T-Shirts sites to be most interesting. I think I will be visiting these two sites again. They were a little different than the norm.

Week 7 # 17 Technology

After the Horizon crash, what can I say....we have become too dependent on technology to say the least!!! It can be a pain at times but no matter how we complain we definitely are dependent on technology and are thrown completely off course without it. I think people as a whole have a love hate relationship with technology. When it is up and running and making our lives easier we love it, but when it is not working properly we hate it!!!!

Week 7 #16 Wiki

I edited the IHCPL Wiki by adding one of my favorite books to the site. One of my favorites is The Color Purple by Alice Walker. I even added an image of the book. Before this exercise, I was only familiar with Wikipedia, the online community encyclopedia. I found this exercise to be most informative and I can see wikis being powerful tools in centralizing information.

Week 6 # Library 2.0

I really like the blog, Sharpen these skills for Librarian 2.0, by Michael Stephens Librarian, Blogger. I like the fact that he makes the point that “the Library is human because it makes the library a social and emotionally engaging center for learning and experience". I think we should look at Librarian 2.0 as the “strategy guide” for our customers meet their information needs. Librarians will have to keep up! I think libraries/librarians will have to adjust their thinking as far as their role in this whole information revolution. We still will help customers meet their information needs but maybe in different ways. Who would have every thought a library without a card catalog. We have adjusted! So change will come and we will adjust! We won't go away like the dinosaurs. We will reinvent ourselves and our profession will continue to grow. We will continue to find ways to meet the information needs of our customers.

Week 6 #14 Technorati

I just completed exercise #14 technorati. How you search does make a big difference. When I searched "learning 2.0" in "Blog Posts", I got 381 hits, 0 hits under "tags" and 764 hits under "blog directory". With close to a 100 million blogs, I am glad Technorati has made it easier for us to get the most out of the information out there.

I had an opportunity to explore the most popular sites according to Technorati. I quickly learned that porn was popular. Surprise....no surprise there. It was interesting to see the sites that so many are interested in. Makes you wonder!!!!!!

Week 6 - Tagging

I think delicious.com will really be helpful. Currently, I am constantly adding bookmarks to my personal computer. I use multiple computers so when I switch computers I no longer have access to my bookmarks. So being able to access my tags/bookmarks anywhere and at anytime will be a big help. Of course being able to add tags to describe my bookmarks helps me to be more organized. Unlike folders, I can make up tags when I need them and you can use as many as I like. The result is a better way to organize my bookmarks and a great way to discover interesting things on the Web. As a reference librarian, I am always discovering new web sites that I would like to have access to later and would like to share with coworkers.

Week 5 #11 A Thing About Library Thing

Library Thing is okay. I added five books easily. I really don't care to catalog my books; however, I would use it to keep up with items I would like to read or view in the future. For now I have titles and authors scribbled on many pieces of paper everywhere.

RSS Finding Feeds Week 4 # 9

I am on a roll now!!!! I have 13 feeds!! I am so up to date now. I even have a feed from my coworker's blog. I have a weather feed. We know how quickly the weather can change in the Houston area. I even have a feed from a cat lovers site. Now I can make sure I'm taking care of my cat properly. I got an entertainment feed so I can keep abreast on all the Hollywood drama....Oh my gosh what has Brittany done today. I have a financial feed...I hope to invest wisely and make much money! I yeah, I did get some serious feeds like I used the bloglines site to get most of my feeds. I tried Feedster. It was a little difficult. Many of the feeds I selected would not feed to my account because of various reasons. I really liked topix. I found it to be really simple to use. I also tried Technorati. It wasn't difficult to use. I added a financial feed through the site. I suppose the only trouble I really had with any of the feeds were those sites wanting me to add the feeds to my 'Favorites' folder instead of to my bloglines account. However, once I got the hang of copying the URL to my bloglines account, I didn't encounter any other problems. I liked this exercise!

RSS Week #4 8

Wow! I learned lots of cool stuff this week. I set up 13 RSS feeds through http://www.bloglines.com/. It wasn't difficult at all. I am really enjoying this exercise.

Week 2

Here are my thoughts on online safety and privacy. I'm never absolutely sure that my information won't be compromised when sharing information online. I pay the majority of my bills and conduct most of my banking online. I'm still scared each time because I don't know if all sites are totally secure. Well...I don't think any site is completely secure. We are always hearing about many of the largest companies' information databases being compromised. Each time I complete an online transaction, I literally say a small prayer. I try not to post pictures online for general population to see. This area really scares me...it's already so easy to get a person's address and telephone information...do I really want them to have my picture too! We have no privacy!!!! Be safe.............

Week 1

I just finished viewing the cute little video, We've heard your call from the jungle...help is on the way. I have a little experience with blogging and podcast so these areas shouldn't be too challenging. The other items will be a challenge but I'm looking forward to the challenge. I'm more than ready to tackle these "emerging technologies".

Excited

Hi there everyone! I'm so excited because I just created my first blog account. I feel so special.
